Social Emotional Learning

Building positive relationships: The foundation of an effective early education program must be positive, supportive relationships between teachers and children and families. Children notice responsive, caring adults. Through this, children develop positive self-concept, confidence, and a sense of safety that help reduce the occurrence of challenging behaviour.

Strategies for Building positive relationships:

Play, following the child’s lead

  • Greet every child at the door by name (Life skills, Courtesy)
  • Listen to the children’s stories and idea’s
  • Offer praise and encouragement
  • Acknowledge their efforts
  • Give compliments often
  • Read a child’s favorite book to the whole class
  • Learn some of the key phrases in each child’s home language
  • Tell children how much they are missed when they are away or absent
  • Give genuine warmth and affection

Social and emotional learning (SEL) is the process through which children and adults understand and manage emotions.

Social-emotional learning (SEL), as defined by the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) is “the process through which children and adults acquire and effectively apply the knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary to understand and manage emotions, set and achieve positive goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.”1

Relationship skills and abilities: To communicate clearly, listen well, cooperate with others, resist inappropriate social pressure, negotiate conflict constructively, and seek and offer help when needed.

Social Development:

Infants begin their social development by forming strong bonds with caregivers. From nine months on infants will offer and accept toys from each other, and play social games.

During the preschool age children begin to play cooperatively
